On behalf of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, we analyzed current verification and certification systems for recycled and bio-based plastic content, with a particular focus on traceability, transparency, and credibility.
The project was driven by rapidly evolving EU requirements for recycled and bio-based plastic content, increasing the need for clear and reliable verification systems that can prevent inaccurate or misleading sustainability claims.
As part of the assignment, we reviewed existing certification schemes, methodologies, standards, and control systems, and conducted interviews with stakeholders across the plastics value chain. We identified key challenges related to traceability and transparency and proposed verification measures to strengthen confidence in claims regarding recycled and bio-based content.
The findings highlighted the need for more harmonized and robust verification systems to ensure credible sustainability claims and strengthen trust in the market.
